Brown University’s one-year, on-campus accelerated master of public health (MPH) for clinicians is designed to transform clinicians into public health experts, researchers and leaders.
The accelerated MPH for clinicians is for professionals who already hold advanced clinical degrees in healthcare-related fields or those who have completed at least two years of medical school. Throughout the program, you’ll develop competencies to design clinical trials and write a statistical analysis plan, create a quality improvement project within a healthcare system and apply ethical principles to public health practice.
Drawing on expertise from faculty within biostatistics, epidemiology, health services, policy and practice, and behavioral sciences, the curriculum will expand your scope of knowledge by bringing public health expertise to your field and preparing you to:
- Pursue a career in public health
- Serve a role in public health as a clinician or scientist
- Engage in public health research and obtain grants and other types of funding
- Enhance your expertise in public health, which will also benefit the institutions where you work

As a student in the accelerated MPH program, you will have access to Brown University’s extensive collection of library/information resources, including: the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning’s English language support and Writing Center, Student Accessibility Services, and health and mental health services.

Applicants must either possess an advanced clinical degree (e.g., M.D., Ph.D., D.O., Pharm.D., DDS, DMD, O.D., DVM, DNP, DPT, or the international equivalent) or be a medical student who has completed at least two years of medical school.

TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for international applicants; however, the Graduate School at Brown does offer a list of exceptions. Applicants should submit official TOEFL scores to both code 3094 (Brown University) and 5688 (SOPHAS). IELTS scores are also accepted.
Official Transcripts:
Required. All applicants may upload unofficial transcripts for application submission. Official transcripts are ONLY required for enrolling students before classes start. An international transcript evaluation (WES, ECE or SpanTran) is required for degrees from non-U.S. institutions before enrollment.
Letters of Recommendations:
Three (3) letters of recommendation are required.
Personal Statement:
Writing samples demonstrating quantitative skills and analytical writing skills required.

Completion Requirements
The accelerated MPH for clinicians is comprised of:
- 10.5 units (i.e., the equivalent of 42 semester credits) that students can complete in one year (i.e., July through May), beginning with an online session in the summer
- A curriculum that enables clinical professionals to achieve a deep and broad understanding of public health at a pace that complements their existing expertise and experience
- An MPH practicum and an Integrated Learning Experience (ILE)
