The master’s in health informatics merges the fields of data science, technology and healthcare. The program equips you with the knowledge and skills to harness cutting-edge analytics to improve diagnosis accuracy, create personalized treatment plans and seamlessly coordinate patient care across healthcare teams and the entire healthcare ecosystem.

This program offers the following degree:

  • Master of science (Sc.M.): Coursework and practicum experience in seven major competency areas:
    • Health and healthcare
    • Data science
    • Social and behavioral science
    • Health information technology and digital health
    • Professionalism
    • Leadership
    • Team science

The program intentionally brings together students from all industries, job functions and career levels to engage in diverse conversation and inquiry – enabling you to learn as much from your classmates as the faculty. Further, you will have the unique opportunity to work on a range of health informatics projects with faculty at Brown University and its affiliated healthcare delivery partners.

Graduates are prepared for careers as health informaticians, data analysts, data scientists, healthcare IT specialists, and consultants, contributing to advancements in healthcare quality, efficiency and patient outcomes.

Brown undergraduates can apply to this program as a fifth-year master's degree.

Application Requirements

GRE General:

Recommended but not required.

TOEFL/IELTS:

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), is mandatory for any non-native English speaker who does not have a degree from an institution where English is the sole language of instruction or from a University in the following countries: Australia, Bahamas, Botswana, Cameroon, Canada (except Quebec), Ethiopia, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Gambia, Uganda, United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales), West Indies, and Zambia.

The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition and the IELTS Indicator exam are accepted.

Students from mainland China may submit the TOEFL ITP Plus exam.

Official Transcripts:

All applicants may upload unofficial transcripts for application submission. Official transcripts are ONLY required for enrolling students before classes start. An international transcript evaluation (WES, ECE, or SpanTran) is required for degrees from non-U.S. institutions before enrollment.

Letters of Recommendations:

Three (3) recommendations required

Personal Statement:

1000-word personal statement that gives your reasons to pursue graduate work in health informatics. The statement should include examples of how your past education and work experience have motivated you to pursue a career in health informatics, as well as your professional goals.

Resume/CV:

A professional resume or curriculum vitae must be submitted that provides a summary of relevant educational and work experiences. As appropriate, links to selected research or work products (including publications, whitepapers, artwork, or code repository) can be provided within the resume or CV.

Completion Requirements

This program consists of 8 courses or 32 academic credits.

The program is designed to be completed in 2 years (4 semesters) or at an accelerated pace in 1 year (2 semesters and 1 summer). The latter would accommodate undergraduate students interested in the Fifth-Year Master’s Degree option (where two courses may be completed while an undergraduate and the remaining six during the additional year) or medical students who could take a leave of absence to participate.
