Artificial intelligence is transforming every industry, but building AI requires more than understanding algorithms. In as little as 16 months, Brown University's master’s in computer science: artificial intelligence & machine learning track prepares students to understand AI across the entire technology stack — from computer systems and hardware infrastructure to machine learning, deep learning and applications, to the human impact of intelligent technologies.

As a specialized track within Brown's master’s in computer science, the curriculum is designed for students with technical backgrounds and technical professionals who want to deepen their expertise in AI. This track is available in both online and in-person formats. Whether you study on campus or online, students take the same rigorous courses, learn from the same distinguished Brown faculty and earn the same degree.

This program offers the following graduate degree:

  • Master of Science in Computer Science (Sc.M.)

Additional Information

On-campus students have access to shared office space as well as the department's research labs and computing resources.

Brown undergraduates can apply to this program as a fifth-year master's degree.

On-campus

Study AI/ML on Brown’s campus in Providence, becoming part of a collaborative community of computer scientists, faculty and peers. Courses bring students together for in-person instruction, discussion and collaboration, with opportunities to engage directly with faculty and classmates throughout the program. On-campus students can also take advantage of research opportunities working closely with faculty and graduate students, as well as internships. Students benefit from the immersive experience of studying at Brown while developing the technical expertise to design, build and evaluate AI systems.

Online

Online students earn the same Brown degree while studying alongside on-campus students in the same courses, taught by the same distinguished faculty, without putting their career on hold. Courses are delivered through a flexible online format that combines live, synchronous lectures with asynchronous learning activities. Students can participate in live sessions in real time or watch recordings on their own schedule, providing opportunities for regular interaction with Brown faculty and classmates while maintaining the flexibility to balance graduate study with professional and personal commitments.
